MODERNE

Streamline Moderne was an outgrowth of the ideals of Art Deco combined with the International style and the machine aesthetic. The smooth, curved, aerodynamic forms of airplanes, ships, and automobiles were used as source materials. The emphasis on the horizontal was intended to give the illusion that airstreams could move effortlessly over the surfaces. Streamlining was viewed as a reduction of complexity and a hope for a brighter, easier future.

Defining Characteristics:

• Horizontal emphasis
• Horizontal banding
• Curved walls
• Porthole windows
