This year’s Best Exterior Renovation is Rick Hall & Don Wood’s successful restoration of a previously unremarkable Park Hill bungalow at 2853 Bellaire Street back to what they think is a truer version of its original state a century ago. “We bought our home in 1997,” they say. “And since we have lived here, neighbors have always told us that originally the house had a tile roof on it, which we believe a previous owner sold under financial distress.” Great restoration stories are often sparked this way. Taking their cue from this information, Rick and Don installed a tile roof in 2008 with the idea of reviving the bungalow with a Mediterranean or Latin feel. Choosing “a little 21st century color”, as well as details such as Mexican tile steps, painted ironwork and complimentary landscaping, helped to complete their very personal version of an updated dwelling in touch with its historical roots.
