Winner in the Best Kitchen Renovation category:
Classic Homeworks
for 2605 Xavier Street
The design/build remodelers at Classic Homeworks are no strangers to our Restoration for Living contest, having won in two categories last year. Their entry on behalf of the homeowner of 2605 Xavier Street took this year’s prize for Best Kitchen Renovation. The owner of this charming, modestly-sized West Highlands/Sloane’s Lake area Bungalow, an avid cook and baker, needed more functional space in her small, dark and dated 1960s kitchen. Creating a space that would combine functionality with a more modern, open plan for entertaining topped her renovation wish list, but maintaining the personality of her historic home was also a goal. In opening a half-wall between the kitchen and dining room, Classic Homeworks chose to match the new archway above it with those present throughout the rest of the house. An oblong arch and the home’s coved ceilings made this a job more easily said than done. The result was flawless. In the newly renovated kitchen, classic, historically accurate materials and elements such as a farmhouse sink and soapstone countertops result in a kitchen that, if not for the modern conveniences, looks as if it might have been there from the beginning. “The kitchen now blends seamlessly with the existing part of the house”, says Classic Homeworks owner Kelli Ortegren, whose winning project is yet another example of the beautiful work her company has steadily contributed to Denver’s historic preservation scene over the years.
